Zen Master

” An ancient Zen master Takuan, describes how the mind of the martial artist functions. In two short essays, NO GAP and MIND LIKE A SPARK, he talks about the warrior’s fluidity in action, explaining that the spontaneous responsiveness of the warrior is not related as much to quickness of action as it is to immediacy of attention and freedom of the mind. He says: “ If your mind stops on the sword your opponent is swinging at you, a gap opens, and in that gap your action falters. If there is no gap between your opponent’s striking sword and your action, the sword of the adversity will become your sword. A mind like a spark means the state of mind where there is no gap, When flint is struck, sparks fly at once….there is no interval for the mind to linger…..if attention lingers, your mind is taken over by others.”

” The mistake consists in our splitting into two what is really and absolutely one. Is not life one as we live it, which we cut to pieces by recklessly applying the murderous knife of intellectual surgery? “

Moving Forward into a Better Life

 Commit to improving yourself, growing into a better person. Surely are we all unfinished, all in need of some improvement. Then you can show the world what can be achieved, what you can do with this one amazing life.

Strive to do your best in all that you undertake. Quality is the watch word, start to finish. Never be content with delivering second best which only reflects badly on you.

Treat everyone you meet with respect and civility. Everyone is important – no exceptions.

Recognize that friendships come in all sorts of packages. But there is only one that can really serve us well and that’s a valued friendship which is committed and loyal. Too often we accept what might be called ‘ arms length ‘ friendships, people who come and go in our lives with no real commitment to us. That’s OK, provided we recognize them for what they are and not expect too much from them. But in the final analysis, I suspect, it’s the real thing that we are after – a closely bonded reciprocated companionship that endures stormy weather to touch our live profoundly.

Always police your language; nothing is so damaging as a misplaced word at the wrong time with the wrong person – it can be a devastating. Always try to use positive, constructive words. Even criticism can be productive if we apply discrimination to what is being delivered verbally.

Loss is an inevitable aspect of the lives we lead. The more we engage with life, the more we give to it, the more will be taken away from us. Accept this reality in a non-judgmental way and continue to give which will benefit others who may not be here yet.

Always be honest in all that you do, in your dealings with others, in your dealings with yourself. This way you remain authentic and genuine to your real self.

Change is something we all have to confront every day of our lives. We are all on the conveyor belt of never ending change, a constant dynamic that moves us continuously forward. So the only option we really have is to accept this restless state of affairs and enjoy the present,  the  ‘now ‘ moment in all its full but transitory bloom.

Doubt will always crop up in our decision making, this is only natural. But there is nothing to fear, for it isn’t necessarily a negative force just a ‘ wait and see ‘ pause. Doubt can help to pull us back, to check and re-check thus contributing to a more solid outcome.

Things do not always go our way – have patience.

People do not always do what we want – have patience.

We, ourselves do not always deliver what we want – have patience.

Cultivate patience for a more relaxed calming existence which can eventually guide you to success.

In a world that is spinning ever faster, where there seems to be little or no time to relax and unwind – we do need to make a stand. We need to recognize the harmful effects that over-burdened activity can bring and pull back into saner, quieter more calming waters.

Health is the number one priority for without it we can achieve very little. Health is an essential requirement in any achievement or success, so do everything possible to look after yourself: physically, mentally and spiritually.

William Wordsworth

The world is too much with us; late and soon,
Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers;
Little we see in Nature that is ours;
We have given our hearts away, a sordid boon!
This Sea that bares her bosom to the moon,
The winds that will be howling at all hours,
And are up-gathered now like sleeping flowers,
For this, for everything, we are out of tune.
